Massachusetts tides: common questions

What time is high tide in Massachusetts today?

High tide arrives at a different time at each station. Amelia Earhart Dam, Mystic River reaches 10.38 ft at 1:35 pm; Annisquam, Lobster Cove reaches 9.79 ft at 1:37 pm; Barnstable Harbor, Beach Point reaches 10.35 ft at 1:46 pm. The table above lists the next high and the next low for all 89 Massachusetts stations.

Where is the biggest tidal range in Massachusetts?

Sesuit Harbor, East Dennis, where high and low water differ by 10.7 ft today. The smallest of the 89 Massachusetts stations with a range today is Wasque Point at 1.2 ft. Range varies along a coast because the shape of a bay or estuary amplifies or damps the same ocean tide.

Is there a minus tide in Massachusetts today?

Yes, at Chatham Harbor, Aunt Lydias Cove, Newburyport, Round Hill Point and 3 others. The lowest is -0.28 ft at 3:02 am. A minus tide is water below mean lower low water, the zero point for US predictions, and it exposes ground that is normally covered.

Are Massachusetts tides semidiurnal or diurnal?

Not all alike. 62 are semidiurnal and 27 are mixed semidiurnal. Each station page classifies itself from its own predictions rather than from a regional rule, because the pattern changes along a single coast.

How accurate are these Massachusetts tide predictions?

NOAA states roughly ten minutes on timing and half a foot on height for a reference station in ordinary weather. 49 of the 89 stations here are reference stations; the rest are subordinate, with times and heights derived from one by a published offset, so expect a little more spread. Weather is the bigger factor either way. A storm surge or a strong onshore wind can raise real water well above the prediction, which is astronomy only.
