US marine forecasts: common questions

What is a small craft advisory?

A small craft advisory is a notice the National Weather Service issues when sustained winds or seas reach a level hazardous to small boats, commonly 21 to 33 knots of wind, or steep seas, though the exact thresholds vary by region. It is an advisory rather than a prohibition, and it means conditions are dangerous for inexperienced operators and small vessels.

How often do these forecasts update?

The NWS reissues coastal waters forecasts roughly every six hours, and amends them sooner when conditions change. Each of these 537 zone pages stamps the issuance time of the text it is showing, and the buoy observations beside it are usually less than an hour old.

Are the wind and wave numbers measured or forecast?

Each marine page carries both, kept separate. The conditions at the top of each page are measured by a real buoy, named, with its distance and the time of the reading. The charts below are the NWS gridded forecast for the next three days.

Why do seas sometimes come from a different buoy?

About a third of coastal buoys are an anemometer on a piling with no wave sensor at all. Where the nearest buoy cannot measure seas, the wave height is taken from the nearest one that can, and that buoy is named separately so the two numbers are never read as one observation.
